Youth and Social Entrepreneurship: A Glimpse into the Future

In the ever-evolving landscape of social entrepreneurship, the voices of the youth resonate with potential and purpose. A recent survey commissioned by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Employment, Social Affairs, and Inclusion sheds light on the perspectives and aspirations of young people across the 27 Member States of the European Union.

Unveiling the Notion of Social Entrepreneurship: Social enterprises, those entities blending entrepreneurial vigour with a profound social purpose, are gaining traction. The survey reveals that 37% of young respondents believe companies should prioritise people and the planet over profit, showcasing a growing inclination towards socially responsible business models.

Youth Aspirations in Entrepreneurship: If allowed to establish their businesses, their motivations extend beyond financial gains. A significant 46% of youth desire to follow their passions, while 25% aim to impact the world positively. The survey underscores the youth’s commitment to social and environmental goals, aligning with the ethos of social entrepreneurship.

Social Entrepreneurship Awareness: Despite the momentum, there’s a noticeable gap in awareness. While nearly half of the respondents are familiar with the concept of entrepreneurship, only about a third are acquainted with the idea of social entrepreneurship. Initiatives through educational institutions and social media play pivotal roles in introducing the youth to the transformative potential of socially conscious business endeavours.

Self-Employment and the Youth: The desire for self-employment resonates strongly among the youth, with 39% expressing a preference for being their boss. Independence and the freedom to dictate work time and place emerge as the driving forces behind this inclination. However, the allure of steady income, job security, and fixed working hours still draws a significant portion towards traditional employment.

Challenges and Perceptions: While entrepreneurship is an exciting prospect, perceived obstacles include the lack of capital, knowledge, and concerns about financial risks. The youth’s perception of entrepreneurs is diverse, from considering them brave and ambitious to recognising their challenges in making a living.

In summary, the survey paints a dynamic picture of the youth’s role in shaping the future of social entrepreneurship. Their aspirations, coupled with a nuanced understanding of challenges and opportunities, contribute to the narrative of a generation keen on blending business acumen with societal impact. As the world navigates these evolving landscapes, the potential for transformative change lies firmly in the hands of these aspiring young social entrepreneurs.
